The vineyard
The Vilarnau winery is located very close to the cosmopolitan city of Barcelona. Specialising in small-scale, artisan production of exclusive, high quality cavas, this small winery shares its innovative, creative and dynamic nature with Spain’s most avant-garde city.
The “Can Petit i les Planes de Vilarnau” estate occupies 20 hectares in a beautiful corner in the heart of cava country, with magnificent views of the Montserrat mountains, which protect the vines from the cold Pyrenean winds. The vineyards are bordered to the south by the Serralada Litoral (the Coastal Range) whilst to the east the vines are open to the Mediterranean sea just 30 kilometres away. At 250 metres above sea level this beautiful site is excellent for growing vines.
We look after these 20 hectares with as much care and attention as we can. Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, are the cornerstone varietalds for our cavas and we also have plantings of Macabeo and Xarel·lo.
All these varieties are planted on plots with the best aspects so that they receive the number of hours of sunlight they need as well as optimum ventilation, provided by gentle breezes from the Mediterranean, which ensure optimum ripening of the grapes every harvest. Our grapes are all harvested at night, starting in mid-August and finishing at the end of September.
The soil on the “Can Petit i les Planes de Vilarnau” estate is alluvial in origin, formed of layers of lime and clay.
